Narrative: A Trip to the Circus

The Brief: To design a book based on a personal story of guilt, loss, luck or fear.

Solution: A Trip to the Circus
‘A Trip to the Circus’ is a story of guilt, based on a traumatic experience from when I was 7 years old where I volunteered my Dad to go into the circus ring to perform with the clowns. Very quickly, I began to realise how horrifying this was for him, and the family have been traumatised ever since. To this day my Dad has never let me forget this day, and the guilt has never left me.

The book takes the reader through the twists and turns of the story through the grid breaking layout, and presents a symbolic and typographic representation of the circus that relates to my inability to understand the situation as a child. The bright primary colours and experimental layout keep the fun element of the circus.
